Day 76 - Monday January 25, 2016
Monday January 25, 2016
This week is the week of our #s24o ride. I've done it every year since 2010. I started doing it as an overnight bike ride when me and a co-worker/Sgt constantly talked about bikepacking, so one bored night, out of the blue, I decided I was going to do it. And it was cold. It always is in January during these weekends.
I remember that first ride. I took about 5 lbs of pasta, cookies, firewood, sleeping bag; tent--ridiculous amounts of stuff for my first ride. It was an amazing night though. I did it during the weekend when I was overly bored, and in between the NFL Championship games and Superbowl. It's a great weekend to go out and do things.
The next year, my Co-worker and I went. Same route. Added a stop at Peglegs on the way there and ate a Grouper sandwich with cheese. Blevin Blogged about it and got published in Adventure Cycling magazine. It was a pretty good detail about our night. One problem omitted though. i had to go to the bathroom and it was COLD out, but dark too. As i went to run to the bathroom, i kicked out his downline and thus sprayed the inside of his humid tent, dousing him with water--cold humid water. Then I couldn't find the pin. It was needless to say, awkward, but a great evening anyway.
Year three my neighbor, Blevin and I went, same stops. Same kind of evening. A great time.
Year 4, we added my friends Tom and Ray, TJ and the six of us went--the same for year 6, when my other co-worker Alvin joined us for a test ride. He parked at Pickens and joined us at Peglegs, then drove home. TJ joined us this year too for the first time. He has two trips under his belt now. Once for year 4 and once for year 5.
Year 5 was notable because it SLEETED on the way there. That was almost the year we turned it around and called our sag support, but once we got to Peglegs, the skies cleared up and, although it was cold, it was a great time.
Every year, i packed panniers, or different items to almost overpack. I've tried to lighten my load every year, and last year, I did the trip on a three speed with a pack tied to the seat and the rack. I was in much better shape last year. This year, Blevin bought a vintage road bike, so I'm going to try and keep up with that theme and plan on going lightest yet. The weather is supposed to be perfect for camping, with temps in the high 40's to low 60's. I can only hope the wind will be low for this years ride. Unfortunately only five of us are going this year, as TJ had to cancel due to his brother in law graduating from naval bootcamp in Chicago.
Here is my load this year. It's easily the lightest ride I'll try to take. The only thing missing is the sleeping bag on the bars. It'll be the best ride yet, no matter who goes.
Looking forward to Friday.
