Day 66- Day 68 Friday January 15, 2016 - Sunday January 17, 2016

On Friday  I worked a three hour day, with all intentions on being able to spend time at the beloved Double Jack beach house owned by my sister-in-law's family.  We had been planning a trip there for years but being able to see Jay Farrar was the final straw to be able to get them to go. I always love going here, being able to choose venues on that 17 mile strip of roadway for about 180 artists made it even better.  When we got there, the weather was just starting to cool down after a short warm front of 60 degrees . We got there around 3:30 and I was able to snap this snapshot of the sunset in the distance about an hour later.  Let the festivities begin!

My main show I wanted to see was Hayes Carll--he did not disappoint.  As badly as I wanted to see Bob Schneider, I heard the venue was pretty full so we decided to stay at Caliza and listen to whomever was playing at the time. There were five on stage and they all sounded great--I could only hope this would be how the weekend turned out.  Yep, it was an awesome weekend.

DAY 67, Saturday January 16, 2016

Saturday was another fun filled day. After missing Parker Milsap at Caliza the evening before and wanting to have good seats for Hayes Carll (we left early) we were able to catch him at Hibiscus coffee the next morning.  I was able to grab a photo of him after increasing my CD collection by two.  Fantastic artist.  I'd strongly recommend anyone seeing him if they get an opportunity.  A one-man show.  Outstanding!
crappie selfie cell phone pic time (even though I had my camera--doh)

Later that evening, we decided to get to Fish Out of Water early for shows that led up to seeing Jay Farrar.  I was slightly concerned that we got there at 6:45 for a show we were supposed to see at 10pm, but who else was there?  I was told not to miss Griffin House, but dude, he was late by 30 minutes, then what we heard, I thought was sub-par.  We listened to about 2 songs before heading to the main event.

These two guys.  Joe Crookston and Levi Lowrey were on stage for an hour at 7pm.  It was an amazing show.  Joe played a little slide while Levi was playing and there was a little tension, then Levi returned the favor during a song that Joe was singing by 'hey can I borrow that' referring to his violin.  Blew us ALL away, then they played together, after both talents were known to each artist on stage.  I wonder if they artists know who they'll be paired with before going on stage! It was an awesome improvisation on both parts.  Glad we got there when we did.
Joe Crookston and Levi Lowrey--an eye opening, and watering show--what mad ad-libs were had on that stage
Finally, it was time to see Jay Farrar.  It was incredible, but I'll venture to say everything we saw that night was incredible!
Jay Farrar singing some SonVolt and UncleTupelo ditties...perfect end to a perfect evening and day

The unwanted groupie pic, but hey, what else would you expect from Jay?
When it was time to go, we noticed, it was pouring ass rain, and we had all ridden bikes to get there.  No end of rain in sight. No ubers available.  It was alleged a 1.3 mile bike ride, but the ride back was closer to about  3 miles.  Driving downpour and cold night rain, through flooded streets of 30a.  Wifey did the trip too, and we were able to get back and pick up our friends and family before heading back.  A crazy adventuresome night, but couldn't be more worth it--especially since I'm not sitting here with bronchitis or pneumonia at the moment. This is a good thing!

Day 68, Sunday January 17, 2016

The final day. A three day stretch of wonderful adventure filled times and music.  Today headliners Shovels and Rope played on the main stage, then Grace Potter and the Nocturnals for a perfect weather early afternoon show at 1:30 and 3:00.  It was definitely perfect.  I brought the camera just to take a few shots and felt the 24mm captured the day perfectly, along with the venue!
Grace Potter ready.  Got the koozie to prove it!

Coming around from the prior night festivities after mimosas:)

Beers for everyone!  Thanks Steven--I was on guard.

Michael and Cheryl-always having a good time

Joe and Panayota--their first 30a fest too--it was great!

Jen got the best spot for Kristian Bush and Hayes Carll for the second time. Another blast at Fish Out of Water--had us a time
We are already planning on tickets for next year.  Thanks #30afest!  We'll definitely be back!
