I took today off.
Day 162 - Thursday April 21, 2016 (my first heapin helpin of Shinyribs)
Absolutely amazing show we saw tonight at my absolute favorite bar, Callaghans, in Mobile, AL. My wife and I were both absolutely blown away my this entertainer and his string of musicians. I was told about Shinyribs by my best friend in Austin, TX as he gave me a mixtape of them a couple of years ago. Luckily, we have Google Music, and we were listening to all three albums by them all week. The classic 'song of lime juice and despair' is one that I can remember hearing before, but not real sure where--it' just sticks in my head for some reason. Earlier this week, we REALLY got into our porch listening sessions. All I could do was tell people to go, go, go--it was going to be a dance party. It was everything I expected, yet so.much.more. An 8 piece band in an establishment that holds 100, with more room outside with tables and open windows. The beautiful backup women singers, and an amazing trumpeter, an amazing sax player, an amazing keyboard player, bass player, drummer, and of course-that Shinyribs!
They played almost every song we love off Okra Candy, their newest album. We were dancing, beebopin, and I believe there were probably 100 people there. absolutely incredible show. So awesome in fact, that I wanted to see them again the next night at Harbor Docks in Destin--thwarted by parenting, though, when we couldn't get my son home from the Funplex, (that didn't happen) so we stayed home to watch Concussion. Excellent movie by the way. If Shinyribs EVER plays ANYWHERE within 50 miles to 100 miles of you, I HIGHLY recommend seeing this band. It was one of the best concerts I can remember! Hell, they were even able to throw together a very good rendition of 'when doves cry' by the Late, great Prince, who died hours earlier. And they sell cool koozies :)
