The photowalk with Tiffany - Sunday May 1, 2016
Got up early, looking forward to walking with my buddy Tiffany who is a professional Wedding photographer, and a damn fine one at that! I'm always asking questions to her, and she stated she wouldn't mind a nice change of venue and shoot with me as we meander around Scenic Hwy and on the tracks and look for some places to shoot stuff. Avery was all about it when she heard the news. Garrett was gonna go, but got a croupy cough during the night and decided to stay in bed.
We started with a coffee at Drowsy Poet (of course) and then headed to 'the spot'. I noticed immediately she broke out the 5d Mark II and had the 50mm 1.2...whoah. Right to it. We shot a little bit up on top of the hill where the trees are then worked our way to the bottom near the tracks to just take some pics.
I heard some of her absolute horror stories (like falling off a dock with ALL gear into salt water, ruining everything and still having 4 hours to shoot). But as we talked and she answered questions, i felt more comfortable with my shooting and started to notice other things, like flowers growing in the wild,
and of course Jen and Avery.
Tiffany knew immediately how to set up a shot of Avery, but there were fireants in the spot! Unfortunately she was only able to fire off a couple of them, but one of them was what I thought, the shot of the day, easily. A nice foreground bokeh of wildflowers with Avery looking down, and her hand in her hair.
It was easily posted on IG as soon as she saw it. Later we walked about a half mile down the tracks with no cell phone reception (insert spooky music and dialog here) looking for what was called the Ewok Village. I always like to scout out the places we are visiting in google and bing maps to see if there are cool places to go. I read that there is a place nearby the bluffs called the Ewok Village where there were actually multiple tree houses and platforms. Unfortunately the last write up I found from from 2012 and even that seemed a little outdated, stating it was starting to get trashed. Long story short--I was able to find it. I noticed the path from the tracks and decided to explore with rock in hand and camera in the other. It may have been a cool place at one time, but it appeared it had turned into a busted up hobo camp. There was one small platform remaining, with a view of the bay but that was about it. Old tents (still in decent shape) and other pots, pans, assorted empty paint cans, etc. I invited the ladies up as the place was vacant at the time--grabbed a few shots, fell off some platforms and we hustled out, feeling like we were being watched the whole time. It was a bust, but at least it was there and got my heart pumping for adventure!
We were able to visit with Tiffany and Ryan at their house later that afternoon. I had the privilege of fixing the Raleigh her late-mother left her. She hasn't ridden a bike since she was about 11 years old, and actually had trouble keeping her balance. I really hope she gets back on. It'd be fun to meet her nearby for coffee and talk shop. We also visited the Chimney Park, which is an amazing grove of trails and overhanging oaks and even palm trees. I staked out my hammock spot for later adventures. It was a hot humid, muggy day, but it was a lot of fun. We plan on doing it again soon, and hopefully my pics will turn out a little better!
Most of my shooting today was with the 100mm, with the wide-angle getting the 'grove' shots of Chimney park. Settings were basically F4 - F11, ISO 200,400
