Day 190 - Thursday May 19, 2016 (Ivanka comes home)

Day 190 - Thursday May 19, 2016

What originally happened as a joke search for a conversion van to take on our trips this summer quickly turned into a crazy day.

I've always loved conversion vans. I became most interested in them when my dad had his 1960 GMC Suburban 2 door, with rear entry.  It had 8" foam throughout and the fuzzy orange carpet.  It had a spare tire with cover that we as kids used as our table in the coolest sport utility vehicle ever.  He built it up, exchanged engines, transmissions, among other items inside to make one seriously cool machine.

Some of my best memories as a child were all the kids in the neighborhood piling in that thing, stopping at McDonalds, then riding in it 30 miles to Selinsgrove, PA for the weekly friday night dirt sprint car races.  Always looked forward to that, still do and try to work it whenver we are there.  Maybe it'll happen this year for our trip.

Anyway, to make a long story longer, I started looking and had my interest piqued when I jokingly started looking at them on CL.  The first one I found was a 98 Dodge High top Conversion van with 120k miles.  It looked great.  I brought it up to Jen. Then after she thought about it, it didn't seem like such a joke as much.  I would dabble, but the ones we were looking at either had 200k miles, or high 150's for the same price.  Thinking I missed out on my opportunity, I called it off.

From yesterday, knowing I had a payment to make this week, I gladly accepted the offer, wrote a check for the difference, and happily rode my Townie home 18 miles, elated.

Next step was stopping at the credit union on the way home to:
Cool Off
Consider asking dad for a $4000 loan instead of financing thru the credit union.
Look up the cost of timing belt repairs on these cars.

Done, done, and done.  Dad loaned me the money (I told him I'd pay it off in 14 months)
I checked the cost of timing belt repair ($750), then got together with Jen to go and get the title and paperwork for the car.

Best news was our total debt on autos went from 17500 to 10000 on both cars, getting Avery ever closer to driving her own car too!  Win all around.

Unfortunately, but luckily on Friday when I tried to get the title changed over, i found out that I needed the 'power of atty' that she signed to be notarized.  I also forgot about this until about 4pm when I went to get the VIN verified. Found out i still needed to get the power of atty signed over and I didn't have that piece of paper yet.

I was on the phone with the seller, and talking to the clerk and calling any available clerk to try and remedy the problem. Luckily, last minute, about five minutes before it was time to close, they granted permission for her to have it notarized as a genuine copy.  Saturday Jen and Avery met her at the visitor center on her way out of town to get the certified paperwork.  I am just hoping I can get all this done with no more problems.  Lets cross our fingers.
