Day 207 - Sunday June 5, 2016
Another off day for pics. Been slacking lately.
Of worthy mention, Jen and I set up a 'one-way' paddle excursion after picking up GT from his cousins house. I staged a vehicle at Shoreline Park, while Avery picked us up and took us to the drop off point.
Today we decided (because of weather) to paddle from NLO soundside to Shoreline Park. An estimated 3.2 miles. Luckily we had a tail wind through the NLO. We took a water break and ate an apple in the cooler waters, as stormy skies loomed overhead. I brought the Nikon but did not really want to show the same pics as yesterday, so decided not to take any.
I was thinking the whole time about how we were going to set ourselves up to go under the Pcola Beach Bridge without hopefully getting hit by fishing lures, or errant casts. Little did I know the current at the Marina. The water was deep, and all of a sudden, the waves appeared out of nowhere to kick up to about 1-2 ft swells. Jen and I went quickly to kneeling and sitting mode, paddled hard, and rode them out. It was a little scary, and, after we got to the bridge we both talked about the fact that we probably should have donned our life jackets.
The current pushed us a little toward the marina wall and the winds died down, but the surf kept up. Strange area. We got through it though, and by the time we got to the other side of the bridge, we calmed down a little bit. Jen got her board a little close to mine (we might have touched) but it was enough to knock me off mine. As I heard her snicker 'not my fault', I couldn't help myself but knock her off her board. Probably a bad decision in retrospect because she fell forward, barely missing her head on the board as I knocked it out of the way. The water was deeeeeep too. I don't know how deep, but probably not the place to be screwing around. Once she went overboard, I realized she lost her hat. I grabbed her hat quickly, then realized the cooler fell off the board. The cooler with our straps (very important) to strap the boards to the top of the vehicle on the way home. Luckily I was able to swipe underwater blindly and grab them before they started to sink. We righted ourselves, and paddled gently to the shore, between the docks on an open very nice area of beach. Each of us enjoyed a much deserved PBR and ribbed each other.
Not long later, we were at Shoreline Park. The best decision we made was to make it a short trip. If we'dve gone all the way around the GB peninsula, the trip would have been almost 8 miles. We are definitely not conditioned for that type trip, and I was glad we decided against it.
We were exhausted by the time we got home. Had the nervous energy when we got in the car, but it left us not long later, and we both enjoyed a well-deserved, albeit short, nap.
