Day 215--Monday June 13, 2016
Day 215 - Monday June 13, 2016
I didn't have much energy left over from pulling boards yesterday. Since I didn't have much energy from yesterday's deck refurbishing (basically flipping boards over to show the 'nice' side--the non-weathered side), I didn't have much creative spirit. I DID find however that water can cause just as much damage as termites. I noticed this once I got to a point of the 2x8 joists and realized that 4 inches of the 8 inches of board were ruined by water intrusion over the past 8 years. I figured the majority of this was no gutter on the side of the house, and having two gable points (and a shower) basically entering the deck might have caused this problem.
Jen and I drove to the local Lowes a mile away and bought another 10' section of 2x8. This time with a 1.5 inch 'drip edge' to cover the nail (no longer using screws on a deck top down--ever) entrance and seal out the water. The drip edge was only 3.09 a 10' piece, so I figured that would work out quite nicely.
SOOOOO-the only pics today will be showing the power of water intrusion over the course of the past eight years. My back and hammies hurt. Hopefully we'll get at least another five years out of the deck we rarely use.
