Day 266 - Friday August 5, 2016 (Drivin n Cryin)

Day 266 - Friday August 5, 2016
I'll never forget the first time I heard 'Scarred but Smarter'. I was lying in bed, listening to 'flipsides' on TK 101. Back when there were DJ's. Back when they could play the great stuff.  It lasted every Sunday night from 9:30-11 around 1985-86. A whole 90 minutes of local and small label recordings. The excitement, of 'what's happening this week in music'.

Back then, I was really starting to get into the new wave sound, from a mixed tape from my buddy in the summer of 1985. Songs from The Exploited, The Clash, The Damned, Violent Femmes, OMD, the Cramps, etc.  I still loved those songs and can almost remember the order they were played. Thanks Jason McAuliff.  This is something I'll always remember.

Over years past, I made mix-tapes as much as I could. They were tapes though, and the dubbing process was basically holding up the speaker to the mic.  Didn't have a lot of money back then nor equipment, so when I got my tape to tape dubber, I was ecstatic!  There were always the Rob flubs-the song playing, with the break in the middle and 'Stop! you're ruining the dub' shouting at my brother in the middle of songs. Just total classics. As much as I wish I still had these, the life of blank Maxell cassettes never lasted over a few months, then came the dropouts, and worse, breaks and getting caught up in the take up rollers.

What I could do, however, was tape that show, every Sunday night, and play the tapes over and over again, until they were re-recorded over with what I hoped to be a better show. I remember listening to Kevn Kinney Screaming that song in the night. It was probably my first epiphany for music, kind of a 'what were you doing when you heard "smells like teen spirit" by Nirvana.  I was up for hours after hearing that song after the show ended knocking out the tape tabs so it wouldn't accidentally be erased from history, and had quite the sleepy day at school the following Monday. Was it worth it?  Hell yes. I got the news letter from DNC in the late 80's after listening to Mystery Road (a top 10 album of all time), read lyrics, and became a follower.

My first great low key bar show was at age 17 when DNC played at a small place downtown at the now defunct Victor Hugo's. Luckily at the time I worked in a seafood restaurant in Pensacola on HWY 29, and had the good luck/fate to work with Thomas Manning, a local artist that had quite the ear for great stuff. He introduced me to my still #2 favorite album of all time, when it came out in 1989. Bob Mould's WORKBOOK. He also influenced me to listen to the Pixies (OMG), but better, he got me into the bar to see Drivin n Cryin at age (barely) 17. I remember Terry telling me DO NOT DRINK as she wrote the X's on my wrists.  Might have been the start of something. Been a music lover ever since, always researching, and knowing where to find it. My mix- tapes, shared with friends who would eventually go to shows with me and the good feeling of them asking me for more, or "what's good in music right now, Rob?,burn me a new mix".

Later the internet happened, and eventually Google Music, but those days were rewarded by hanging out at record shops like the Sound Box on Plantation Rd, learning from the great Eric Moon (Elvis) to listen to new stuff--this doesn't change at the Revolver Records store downtown.

I'll never forget when I bought my Bob Mould album...it was between Stone Roses (whatever it was in 1989), and Workbook.  When I asked, Elvis told me "Stone Roses album is good, but you'll be listening to Bob Mould Workbook 20 years from now."  Make that almost 30 years, Elvis.  Still as great, even better than the first day I heard it. Especially when I got to see the 10 year anniversary show with my besties at the Liberty Lunch in Austin.  Still remember it.

Over the years, I've probably seen Drivin n Cryin about 20-30 times.  They have only disappointed me about 3 or 4 times, which is a pretty good ratio for spending $15 to see them now. Tonight, they didn't disappoint either.  Keep em coming Kevn...we love you and always will.

Needless to say, all pics from tonight were taken with my G4 and only with my friends. I probably should have taken a pic of the band since that's what this post is about, but just as important are the friend you share the shows with over the past 20 years!
