Day 280 - Friday August 19, 2016
Day 280
Gallery night is always one of my favorite Friday's of the month. There was a little bit of hem-hawing there about the future of the night, but the powers-that-be showed up and decided to make it more of an art thing, and less of a party in the street and get drunk thing. I'm in!
What makes August Gallery night special is the "Power of Photography" exhibit. Over the course of the year the Wide Angle Photo club offers a contest to local amateur photographers in multiple categories. I learned about this on the day of the deadline (imagine that) or I would have submitted a couple of my own. I believe it cost money to enter your photos, and the judges pick multiple ones to be entered. I remember Scott asked me if he could submit a pic of Avery on the water. Although I gave permission, it wasn't my favorite pic he entered (he didn't enter the pic of her). What I was happy for was that his pic of Girl on Water made it to the competition. No awards, but it got his name out there as it was on the wall. Really like this for Scott, as he is still a film shooter. As much as I like to dabble with film, it's just too expensive for developing, etc. Here was his photo that I snapped at the exhibit and sent to him letting him know he made it.
Local exhibits get me excited about photography and different directions. There was also a silent auction and photowalks, and classes for free that are offered. I may have stated my desparation for a couple of camera bags, but hopefully I'll get one. Might go back today to see if i was outbid, otherwise I might not get my $200 for the $30 i bid on :)
After completing our 'rounds' of the galleries (many which have not changed from the previous month) we went to Hopjacks for our happy hour and got to see some friends we hadn't seen in a while. Ended up being a great night.
We also had the luxury of a full moon. I had planned on photoing the moon, as I downloaded a $5 app called TPE. I was a little wary at first to pay this much, but once I got into it I found there is a compass, and google maps show multiple moon and sun projections, angles, time of angle and azimuth--the whole shebang, right on your phone, so you can pick the very cool spots for photos. Money well spent so far. The moon was exactly where the app stated it would be. Too bad it doesn't remove cloud cover! We stopped at the Bartram park for some photo attempts but came away fruitless. The park can be somewhat shady at night so we didn't have all the time in the world to shoot. I was able to get a couple of night photos of the tracks on Tarragona and Main using long exposure. I thought they made our night, even if the moon wasn't cooperative.
Unfortunately, the perfect spot for the moon was hampered by dock lights--very bright ones--so I opted for this long exposure of Jen on a park bench as we decided on where to go next.
