Saturday April 8, 2017--Happy Bday to GT and me?

Guns, cameras, birthdays and garage sales

March 24, 2017

So I've been following LOMOGRAPHY a LOT on Facebook, since that's about the only place on FB where I can find any useful information anymore, and noticed yesterday that they put out their #tenandone winners--now when you look up ten and one on instagram, you see a lot of Dallas Cowboys posts before their season ended, ha--so I hit the lomography site and found hundreds of pics.  The thing I like about Lomo is that they're a camera company (obviously) but their photos range on the moment--nothing perfect, nothing composed, just capturing the MOMENT...I've always thought about that being what photography is supposed to be, and is my reason for using film--the little nuances, some problems with developing, light leak errors--it's absolutely BEAUTIFUL!  Now I've been studying photography dilligently, every day for about three years now, and I gotta say, I love looking for used film cameras, hitting thrift stores, garage sales--however I can get my hands on a new one (much to the chagrin of my wife) but, they definitely don't take up as much space as bikes, and--if I can sell bikes to improve on my camera hobby, we're both winning--I'm really glad my wife likes photography--after all, she was the one that carried the point and shoot everywhere in the nineties, right before we went digital in 2000 with our first $1000 Canon Powershot G1 (I still have and use this btw, so I call it a good investment)

Over the past three weeks, my son turned thirteen so we are now a house with nothing but teenagers and old people and pets. For his birthday we went out to dinner at Johnny Hustons so we could catch the basketball games (we don't have cable) and the weekend was full of hiking and adventure.  I was also able to acquire a couple of new cameras during this stint, which I'll write about later. Since his birthday was on a teacher planning day, wifey and I took off in order to spend the day with him. We also hit a garage sale within walking distance.  At the garage sale I noticed an old Ciroflex on an oak stand that the sellers wanted $50 for--the seller, a former photographer talked to me a little bit about the TLR sitting on the stand--she said it didn't work (that she knew of) and they were trying to get the money for the incredible Oak tripod that the camera stood proudly upon. I've been quite the negotiator lately, and asked if she had anything else as far as photography (as I'm checking out the pristine Minolta Maxxum she had listed for $10.  She said she didn't but after checking out the Minolta (under the hardened glare of wifey) I saw a Waterproof Canon WP1 sitting there in a case for $5.  I went to pull the trigger on that, and she said, "I'll sell you the TLR for five too".  I reached in my pocket only to pull out $6 total cash.  WIfey didn't have any money on her, so I asked if she'd take $6 for both--yep, very nice score.

After running a few errands, and finding nothing else of interest at the neighborhood sales, we went back home.  I loaded a roll of bulk bnw film in the Canon and got it ready to shoot. Not long after, my dad and I took my son to his (and my) first time shooting the pistol at a local indoor range.  The kid is obsessed with guns--I blame videogames, but I can think of worse things to be obsessed with--he knows them by type, and other caliber descriptors--something I have never really been interested in or known about.  We ran about 50 rounds through our .38 police special Smith and wesson, while Dad shot his Walther P22....my shooting needs work, but I work with a lot of gun guys so I'll hopefully iron out my poor aim in the long run:)

Indoor ranges are LOUD.

Dad, can I have it--please?  It's only $5000

So we had a great time at the range, I was able to get in some bonding with man/kiddo stuff on my son's thirteenth birthday, and I acquired two new cameras.  File under great day.
