July 15, 2017-Beach Days and Comebacks..

July 15, 2017

Hopefully this won't be too long of a blog post, but it appears I have some catching up to do with my photography blog.  It just so happens that we've been quite the busy family of late, and among pangs of teenagers all living in my house now, eating all my food, having problems with friends, working out problems with friends, feeling depressed, etc...there isn't much time to blog about cameras, but I'll try my best.

I haven't developed film in quite a while, mostly for the reasons listed above. I hope to run a batch of b/w in the developer tank tomorrow with some recent pics.  I seriously doubt i'll get more than maybe one development done due to the fact that my developer has been sitting in a gallon jug for more than six months. No it's not full and there is plenty of air in the jug.  Guess we'll just have to see.

Had a bad day last month as I went to drop off my Fuji Superia film to the local Walgreens.  As I walked in to have it developed to negative, the clerk stated they 'took the machine this morning'.  To my bewilderment, I had to ask if it was just being serviced.  The unfortunate answer was a resounding "no" --they are packing it up, but we'll send it off for development if you would like.  Uh, no thanks.

After some quick research and calls I found that our local photo shop here (20 miles away) will develop to negative color film for about $5.99 a roll.  Not too shabby since I have recently acquired an Epson Perfection V500 scanner for $20 on craigslist. I had to order the trays from Ebay, but for the most part, it is in great working condition, with a much wider negative scan-can scan my 120 films too--which unfortunately I will also have to order the film holder from ebay, but that can wait.

So, yah, it's not the best as far as getting development done, but I liked the convenience of only driving a mile or riding my bike a mile to drop off film, which I could then pick up in an hour.  You should be ashamed, Walgreens, but in the corporate model world, I guess I understand--just don't wanna.

At the request of my wife and me having too many cameras (is there such a thing?) I have toned down my searches for older SLR's unless there is one I can't refuse.  If an OM1 or OM2n shows up on CL for $20 or less, I just can't help myself.  We have found ourselves going to estate sales

a lot lately due to the fact that there are no cameras hardly ever found at local thrifts. Even though we have some luck, the recent garage sale find Polaroid SX70 was a fine pickup for $5. Make that $30 after my first batch of impossible (priced) film; at $3 a shot, you'd better make it count! What's more, after being in Austin with friends for Memorial Day weekend, I left it in their car--the film probably fried up right there. I told them to shoot it, and send it to me in the mail once they use it up.  I guess there were 4 photos left in the pack.  My mistake.  I was happy with what I had gotten though.

Been concerting a lot lately too, picked up some CHEAP Sturgill Simpson tickets for the Wharf, and was able to see X at Vinyl Music Hall for their 40th, yes 40th anniversary show.  Neither show was a disappointment!  So, not in chronological (yes with my digital Canon EosM and my Digital T3i) order, here are some pics from April, May and June, which basically consist of paddleboard pics, beach pics, prom, and concerts, with a trip to Austin. In sad news, my CanonWP1 bit the dust at a pool party.  I let the kids play with it and take some pics under water, but somehow, the housing separated and water got inside, ruining the film and obliterating the lens on the camera.  My $3 investment at least lasted one roll!

So, in a nutshell, this was April, May and June.  We love to ride our bikes, do free stuff, hit concerts, and enjoy what nature brings us.  We spent two days in a row here, and although it's about a quarter mile walk through heavy loose sand, can you really question why we go here?  Hardly any people, and about 10 degrees cooler than the main touristy beach that people like to flock to.  I'm glad we have this little space of heaven.

The day after this picture was taken we took a two week trip to the Northeast with visits in Philly, DC, Va Beach, and Williamsport. That's on the other blog though. I'll talk about my camera searches in the next post.
