August 24, 2017--The Blur of Summer

August 24, 2017

Every year when we return from our family trip, the summer seems to drastically speed up. This, coupled with the fact that school started August 14th this year, along with all the get ready stuff, and clothes buying, and football pre-season practices--you name it--August just becomes a blur.

Polaroid moment:  This kid is a Senior this year!

We were able to take a little time by ourselves and get some paddling in, but the summer has been rife with thundershowers in the late-afternoon; the Pensacola Sound has been very grassy and mucky, and the winds have been heavy.  Needless to say, we did not get too much paddle time in, but the times we had were mostly quality.

The rain has also helped our grass grow in record time, to record heights and has required extra care and mows so our yard does not become a 'natural area'.  Snakes seem to like 'natural areas' and Cottonmouths are found everywhere between the waterways in the deep south.  No thanks.

Enough of the excuses.  I was finally able to finish off the roll of superia from our trip and get some extra pics developed at Calagaz, who charge a good $5.99 a film roll for negs only, no matter how many are on a roll.  I like this and can get my local Crime Scene person to drop off and pick up for me since she lives so close!  Win!

Anyway, the following are some more pics, taken with the trusty Stylus Epic (MJUii) from the Philly streets, some time in the water at the point, and some 'rasslin with my son under the Garcon point bridge on one of the days we were actually able to get out. As you can see, this film has sat around for a while--probably back to March.  I did notice I had a double exposure problem, but since the film was sitting for such a long amount of time, I couldn't remember which camera.  Note to self: start marking the film canisters on which camera you took pics with and don't turn in 5 rolls at a time.

And that's just the first week of August--getting pics back from March thru July.

I took my scanner to work since the computer at home crapped out.  I'd been having problems with the V500 being hooked up to an old Xp machine just for photo processing. The V350 worked fine however. We'll have to see what happens.

The first week of August presented us with cloudy sunsets, due to all the rain we'd been having. On August 3rd, I decided I was going to get out and get some pics of the beach cross (especially with all the news about taking down iconic crosses and statues across america).

They turned out very well, I took some with the wide angle and with the MJUii. Liked both results.

On Aug 4, we won tickets to see the iconic Wanda Jackson at Vinyl Music Hall.  She was amazing, and we had a great time with friends we had not seen in a while!

On August 12 my book arrived that I ordered while heading down rabbit holes while watching youtube videos on pro photographers.  I knew I just  had to order the Memoir of Sally Mann. Found it cheap, in hardback, so I ordered it.

The book was one of the best I'd ever read. Probably a top five--maybe it's because I enjoy that type of photography, but the collodion and her life and the turmoil and the stories, and the family-damn! Got me thinking to start with stories again, and framing the perfect pics, yet flawed ones.  It's hard to explain.

After reading the memoir, I realized I might want to work with lighting and portraiture in the garage with different subjects, using different 35mm and the Xa2. I've been approved to start working with a new Fuji XT-1, which I hope to use a lot at home also. Getting more and more away from canon and looking forward to shooting the Fuji.

I found a pendant light from Lowes for $20. My plan is to shoot folks under this light in different places. I'll see how it goes.  Figure I need to create these pics and also sell some bikes to pay for the stuff I love to do.  Anyway. Here were a few from the shoot with Jen I did last week.

So, during the blur, everything else has been a work in progress.  I guess all the other details are just a side-note right now.
